All Right, What The Heck Did I Find?!
I was out with my metal detector at my farm today and found something really weird about 7 inches down. It read as silver/$1 coin on the Ace 250 which I had in coin mode, so I dug and found a, uh, thingy. It's big, about the size of two fists though it is irregular in shape, kind of like a fused dog poop. I know it's nasty, but it's the only shape I can think of like it. It's definately not doodoo, though, it's some kind of rock. No ordinary rock, however, it makes a distinct metalic ringing sound when struck, is grey in color, and has a definite crystaline grain structure. It weighs maybe 1/3 a pound. I would think it is some kind of metal ore, but I live in FL and so far as I know we don't have any such ore in this state. I found a smaller piece of the same material about 8 feet away, same depth, about the size of a pinky toe. Both pieces look almost like they had been very holt, like melting and boiling hot, but there is nothing there anybody could have been welding on. They don't look like meteorites to me, but who knows?
Does anybody have any guesses as to what this stuff might be? Man, my metal detector finds weird stuff. Earlier, at a park, I found a hosehead. And $0.30 in clad, wooo-hooo! With $0.58 recovered so far I'll have this thing paid off in no time! :ARMS1: |
Re: All Right, What The Heck Did I Find?!
I will go out on a limb and say it might be a meteorite, they are largely metal from my recollection, nickel I believe is primary metal for most

Re: All Right, What The Heck Did I Find?!
I had this dog that I loved so much that I actually had his poop bronzed. When he died, it crushed me and I had to have him cremated. After a year, there were too many reminders of him all around the house, I had to remove them all. I thought that it would be fitting to bury these items all across the state because he loved living in Florida as much as I did.
I see you've found one of Buscuit's bisquits, please send it to me in a bubble wrapped box so I can keep it next to his urn on the kitchen table. Thanks so much, Sincerely, broken hearted |

Re: All Right, What The Heck Did I Find?!
Going by those pics these things are no meteorites... Gunner, I'm gonna need your addy...
Seriously though, I'll get my wife to take som pics of it this weekend to post. Whatever they are they are strange. I've been a fossil hunter and a digger all my life and I haven't ever found anything quite like'em. |
Re: All Right, What The Heck Did I Find?!
Seriously, I'd have to agree with meteorite. It really is amazing how many pieces of space dust hit the earth every day. Looking up at the stars, quite often when you see a falling star, or shooting star, it's actually a piece of rock skimming off the atmosphere, and burning. If you post some pics, I can send it up to my sister - she runs the astronomy observatory in Hope NJ, she's an astronomy teacher and exceptional in her field. She was even entrusted with a sample of moon rocks for a while - steel briefcase and all !!

Re: All Right, What The Heck Did I Find?!
hot, molten looking, metallic, with chrystalline structure and has fragments that are ever ddeper in the earth?
Color me purple it is an meteoroid fragment that has fallen and is now for all intentive purposes a meteorite. http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...-meteorite.jpg Dog Poop? |
Re: All Right, What The Heck Did I Find?!
Are there any railroads or railyards nearby? Looks sorta like a railroad "clinker" to me.
Just a guess, though. |
Re: All Right, What The Heck Did I Find?!
Darn, my wife's camera phone is crippled so it doesn't let you get pics off it without subscribing to a lame "service." So, no pics till I get a camera. However I can say there are no railroads anywhere near me, and after a washing and scrubbing it looks to be a lot more metallic than I originally thought. It's still darn light, lighter than aluminum even I'd guess, and I do know a thing or two about metals as my first trade was welding. I should find a geologist or somebody with a spectrometer, this thing is weird.

Re: All Right, What The Heck Did I Find?!
Are you near any air bases down there?
|
Re: All Right, What The Heck Did I Find?!
Sounds like a tektite (meteorite). They often resemble little black turds.

Re: All Right, What The Heck Did I Find?!
If you are in Florida, How about debris from a failed rocket test or space shuttle ?
|
Re: All Right, What The Heck Did I Find?!
Aside from the color, mine is silver/grey, it does resemble those tektites.
As far as Air Force Bases go, MacDill is not very far away. I have actually recovered part of a failed rocket once, but that was on the East Coast where the spaceports are, and I'm out on the West Coast now. |
Re: All Right, What The Heck Did I Find?!
Hmmm....I wonder if it might be radioactive:eek:

Re: All Right, What The Heck Did I Find?!
Another test you could conduct in determining what you have found is test for its magnetic properties. I believe all meteorites found in the earth are magnetic, and this test narrows your field of ID. Their is much online about mineral identification. I have found one recently that is silver metallic, fist sized and weighs in at a hefty 5 lbs. still working on its identification. Good Luck.

Re: All Right, What The Heck Did I Find?!
Some of meteorites are quite valuable aren't they? I seem to remember reading an article about some old guy in Kansas making a fairly decent living searching for meterorites and selling them.

Re: All Right, What The Heck Did I Find?!
Maybe you found the same thing as me. Is it real lightweight, bends easy on the ends? Did you find it by a old campground. I found some of what you describe they ended up being melted aluminum cans or foil from a fire pit. They would melt down in the hot fire and then get tossed aside or left in the pit. People will paint them gold and sell them as gold nuggets.

Re: All Right, What The Heck Did I Find?!
Aluminum will melt down in a hot fire to some weird shapes. Have some of those in the basement I detected. My worst "wild goose chase" was from a piece of nickel alloy that was broken off the edge of a repaired bulldozer blade. That one had me going for a couple of months.

Goethite aka Bog ore? Any springs in the area?

Re: All Right, What The Heck Did I Find?!
It could be from a lightning strike. I don't know the technical name for it, but it is common down in Florida due to ground minerals. The discription pretty much fits it perfectly. Of course, I 'm just going off of memory of a Discovery Channel show I watched a few ago about lightning.
